Burglar Alarm vs Locks | What to Sort First and Why

Alarms react. Locks prevent. A security specialist explains why most Otley homes should sort their locks first before paying a monthly alarm subscription.

Burglar alarms are sold backwards. The industry leads with the alarm because it generates a subscription. It should lead with the lock because that's what actually stops the door opening.

I'm not anti-alarm. I'm anti the idea that a £30-a-month monitored system is a sensible priority when your front door still has the cylinder the builder fitted in 2004.

What an alarm actually does

An alarm detects. Once it triggers, a burglar is already inside. The monitoring centre calls the keyholder, then maybe the police. Average police response to a confirmed intruder alarm in West Yorkshire is well over ten minutes on a busy evening. A competent sneak thief is gone in under four. The alarm logged the event beautifully.

A decent cylinder, fitted correctly, doesn't log anything. It just doesn't open.

The standard the alarm companies don't mention

TS007 is the British Standard for cylinder security. A 3-star rated cylinder, like the Ultion, Avocet ABS, or Mul-T-Lock MT5+, is tested against picking, drilling, bumping, and snap attacks. Snap is the one that matters most in LS21 and the surrounding villages. Pool-in-Wharfedale, Menston, Burley-in-Wharfedale, Bramhope: these are commuter-belt streets with uPVC doors and standard euro cylinders that snap in about fifteen seconds with tools from any DIY shed.

A TS007 3-star cylinder costs £60 to £120 fitted, once. No monthly fee. No contract. No app to update.

What to sort first: a sensible order

PriorityWhat to doApproximate costOngoing fee
1Replace euro cylinder with TS007 3-star (Ultion, ABS, Mul-T-Lock)£70–£130 fittedNone
2Check door alignment and multipoint lock engagement (GU, Fuhr, Maco, Winkhaus all common here)£0–£80 adjustmentNone
3BS3621 or BS8621 deadlock on any timber door£90–£160 fittedNone
4Good quality door chain or night latch if you're letting or have older tenants£30–£60 fittedNone
5Alarm, once the above is done£400–£900 installed£15–£35/month

The alarm earns its place at step five. Not step one.

The obvious objection

Someone will say: "But my alarm deters burglars before they even try." Fair point, and there's something in it. A visible bell box does have a deterrent effect. So does decent external lighting and not leaving a parcel sign on your gate saying "we're not in".

But deterrence from a lock is absolute. A cylinder that won't snap, on a door that's properly aligned so the hooks and bolts actually engage, gives a would-be intruder a genuine mechanical problem. A bell box gives them a time estimate.

The honest caveat

If you're a landlord with several properties, or you've got outbuildings, or you run a small business on Wharfegate or Cambridge Street, an alarm earns its cost earlier in the list. Remote monitoring has real value when no one's on site. But for a normal semi in Newall Carr Road or a terraced house in Weston, the locks come first.

Sort the physical security and then decide if you want the alarm on top. Don't pay £420 a year in subscription before you've spent £100 on a cylinder that a burglar physically cannot snap.

Fort Secure covers Otley and the surrounding LS postcodes. If you're not sure what cylinder you've got, we can tell you on the phone. Call-outs are typically under 30 minutes, and pricing is given honestly before we start.

Questions people actually ask

Look at the end of the cylinder where it protrudes from the door furniture. If it sticks out more than a few millimetres and has no sacrificial section, it's almost certainly a standard euro cylinder and it will snap. TS007 3-star cylinders like the Ultion or Avocet ABS have a snap-off section engineered to break away before the cam that opens the lock is reached. If your cylinder has no star rating on the packaging or the brand is unknown, assume it's not rated. A locksmith can check in two minutes.
