What Burglars Look For | Read Your Front Door
Walk your own path as a burglar would. Cylinder stick-out, dark porches, side gates, unlocked windows. Spot the signals before someone else does.
Most burglars don't pick locks. They read doors. A slow walk past your front path takes about four seconds, and in those four seconds a practiced eye is running through a checklist you've probably never considered. This post hands you that checklist.
Work through it standing at your own gate. Be honest about what you see.

The cylinder: the single loudest signal
Look at your front door from the pavement. Find the keyhole. Now look at the cylinder barrel itself. Does it stick out proud of the door furniture? How far?
Any cylinder that protrudes more than 3 mm beyond the escutcheon is a snapping target. Snap attack takes under 60 seconds with a pair of slip-joint pliers or a dedicated snap tool you can buy online for a few pounds. The technique exploits a weak point deliberately built into every standard Euro cylinder at the anti-pick pins. Snap the outer section off, and the remaining stub can be turned with a screwdriver.
The rough test: put a 2p coin against the face of your escutcheon. If the cylinder stands proud of the coin, it protrudes enough to be gripped.
What a cylinder tells someone walking past:
- Standard brass cylinder, no visible branding, 5 mm or more of stick-out. Green light. Snap-vulnerable, probably original to the door, possibly 10-plus years old with worn pins.
- Cylinder flush or slightly recessed. Either the door came with a sacrificial anti-snap cylinder that breaks at a controlled point, or someone has fitted a TS007 3-star or SS312 Diamond cylinder with a built-in sacrificial section. Worth finding out which.
- A thumb-turn visible on the inside. Not necessarily bad, but it raises the question of whether there's a letterbox, cat flap or glazing nearby that lets an arm through to reach it.
What to do
Measure your cylinder with the door open. The standard Euro format is 35/45 or 40/45 (inner/outer). Order a TS007 3-star cylinder to match. Avocet ABS, Ultion, and Mul-T-Lock MT5+ are all worth the money at roughly £45 to £90 fitted. Pair a 3-star cylinder with a 3-star handle to get the TS007 Diamond-level door set, which is what most insurers mean when they refer to BS-compliant hardware.

The letterbox: an underrated problem
Hold a ruler to your letterbox. UK postal regulations allow up to 250 mm wide by 38 mm tall. Most residential letterboxes are wider than that and taller. Through a standard letterbox, a length of bent wire can hook a key from a hook inside the hall. A small camera can read a PIN on a wall safe. A thin arm, in a house with a worn or absent draught excluder, can reach further than you'd think.
In older terraces on Cambridge Street or the Newall estate, letterboxes sometimes sit directly above the latch handle. That's not a renovation detail. To someone walking past, it's an invitation.
Look at your letterbox from outside:
- Can you see directly into the hall, or is there a draught-excluder brush or letterbox cage blocking the view?
- Is the letterbox within 400 mm of the latch or deadlock spindle?
- Does the slot have a working internal flap?
What to do
Fit an internal letterbox restrictor cage, around £15 to £25 fitted. It bolts to the back of the door, catches the post, and stops anything entering beyond the flap. If you can see daylight through your letterbox from the inside hall with the door closed, you definitely need one.

Door condition: what wear signals
A burglar doesn't want a noisy, lengthy job. A door that's likely to resist quickly and loudly is a door they'll skip. One that looks tired tells a different story.
Walk back to your gate and look honestly:
- Paint condition. Peeling or flaking paint around the frame suggests the frame itself may have softened with moisture ingress. A frame kick on a softwood frame that's been wet for three winters is a different proposition to a new composite door in a steel subframe.
- Frame gap. Stand close and check the gap between door edge and frame on the hinge side and lock side. More than 4 mm of consistent gap on the lock side suggests the door has dropped, or the frame has moved. That gap means the multipoint hook bolts, if any, may not be fully engaging their keeps.
- Glazing. A sidelight panel or narrow glazed section adjacent to the latch is an obvious weak point. Glazing near a turn-snib or thumb-turn is worse. Double-glazed units don't smash as cleanly as single-pane, but laminated glass or Georgian-wired glass is meaningfully harder than standard float glass.
- Hinge visibility. If the hinges are on the outside face of the door (uncommon, but you do see it on older outward-opening doors in some LS21 properties) and the hinge pins aren't security-pinned, the door can be lifted off without touching the lock at all.

Lighting and concealment
A dark porch is useful cover for ninety seconds of quiet work. A well-lit open frontage with a PIR makes the same job a performance in front of any passing car or neighbour.
Stand outside your own door at 9 pm. Is the approach well lit from existing street or house lighting? Is there a PIR that covers the door itself and not just the path leading to it? A light mounted at gutter height illuminates the path but can leave the door itself in shadow if the porch has any depth at all.
Shrubs and hedges compound the problem. A mature photinia or box hedge along the front boundary screens the door from the street. That screening works both ways.
In Pool-in-Wharfedale and Arthington, older detached properties often have deep porches and mature front hedges grown for privacy. Both are understandable. Both need a PIR placed specifically to cover the door recess, not just the gate.
What to do
- Fit a PIR flood at door-recess level, not just above the garage or at the roofline. Under £40 in hardware, under an hour to fit.
- Trim any hedge or shrub that screens the door from the pavement to below 1.2 m, or remove it entirely if the property is detached with no overlooking.
- If the porch has a ceiling, a bulkhead light on a PIR inside the porch recess is worth more than a floodlight twenty feet away.

Side access and climbing aids
Most residential burglaries that enter through the front door start with a survey of the whole property. Side gates and rear access are part of that survey. But a lot of what enables rear access is at the front.
Look from the pavement:
- Wheelie bins. Three standard bins stacked or stood close to a side wall become a step-and-vault route over a 6-foot side gate in about four seconds. In Otley on collection mornings, bins are out on the street. Between collection days, where do yours sit? If they sit against the side gate or side-return wall, move them.
- Recycling boxes and garden furniture. Same principle. A stacked set of blue boxes against a wall is a step. A garden chair left at the side of the house is a step.
- Side gate condition and hardware. If you can see the side gate from the pavement and it has a standard barrel bolt or a padlock with a shackle exposed, that tells someone the rear of the property is gated but not secured. A closed shackle padlock or a Sold Secure-rated gate lock is meaningfully harder. An open hasp and a flimsy bolt is not.
- Gate height. A 1.8 m side gate with nothing to step onto is a real deterrent. The same gate with a bin, a pallet, or a stack of plant pots alongside it is a 4-second obstacle.

The lock itself: what's actually fitted
You know what lock you have, roughly. Does a person walking past? Sometimes, yes.
On a uPVC door with a multipoint lock, the mechanism isn't visible. The cylinder is. On a timber door, the locks are often more readable. A single Yale-pattern nightlatch with no deadlock beneath it tells a specific story. A deadlock with a visible British Standard kite mark on the escutcheon tells another.

A nightlatch on its own isn't BS3621 compliant and won't meet most home insurance requirements. If that's what your timber front door has, it's worth knowing that BS3621 requires a minimum 5-lever deadlock with a 14 mm bolt throw, and the cylinder must be at least BS EN 1303 Grade 1. That's the starting point, not the aspiration.

What a smart lock says from the pavement
Smart locks are getting more common, particularly on newer builds in Guiseley and Yeadon and on landlord properties where key management is a genuine headache. Most of them fit over the existing multipoint lock mechanism and replace only the cylinder or the thumb-turn. That means their physical security is entirely inherited from whatever multipoint locking mechanism was already there.
A Nuki, a Yale Conexis, or a similar retrofit device fitted to a door with a poor multipoint lock and an unprotected cylinder is not more secure than the door was before. It's possibly less so, because the motor-driven mechanism adds a power-off vulnerability that a manual lock doesn't have.
From the pavement, a glowing keypad or a prominent smart-lock housing signals a few things:
- The occupant probably cares about security (mild positive)
- The door may not have a physical key cylinder that can be targeted (positive, if true)
- The lock almost certainly relies on the existing multipoint mechanism (neutral to negative, depending on what that mechanism is)
None of the mainstream consumer smart locks currently carry TS007 3-star or SS312 Diamond rating. Several carry Sold Secure accreditation. That's better than nothing, but Sold Secure tests physical resistance to specific attack types and not the full range that TS007 covers.

A quick walk-round checklist
Do this now. Takes about five minutes.
At the gate: - Does the cylinder stick out more than 3 mm? Check with a 2p coin. - Can you read the cylinder brand from the gate? If it's unbranded, assume it's a standard. - Is the door frame paint peeling? Any visible gap on the lock side? - Is there glazing within arm's reach of the latch or letterbox?
At the door: - Put your finger into the letterbox. Can you feel the latch or see the hall clearly? - Is there a draught-excluder cage on the back of the letterbox? - If it's a timber door, is there a 5-lever deadlock in addition to any nightlatch? - Are the hinges on the inside face of the door?
Stepping back: - Is the porch or door recess dark at night? Test it at 9 pm. - Does the PIR cover the door itself, or just the path? - Is anything climbable within 3 m of the side gate? - Where do the bins live between collections?
The side gate: - Is the padlock shackle exposed and accessible? - Can anything beside the gate be used as a step? - Is the gate height less than 1.8 m?

Specific issues by property type in this area
Newall and Weston estates in Otley: mostly 1960s and 1970s semi-detached with timber or uPVC doors and narrow side passageways. Side gate access is common and often poorly secured. Bins almost always stored at the side.
Cambridge Street and town-centre terraces: shallow setbacks, often a shared entry passage to the rear. Front door visible from the street but rear access is shared and not gated by the individual household.
Bramhope and Menston detached properties: deep plots, mature screening, integral garages. The front door is often the secondary concern because the garage door is the weak point, but a door connecting the garage to the house is frequently an internal door standard rather than an external door standard. That connecting door should meet PAS24 if the garage is accessible.
Ilkley and Burley-in-Wharfedale larger properties: higher value contents, so the target profile is different. Cylinder quality matters more because the effort threshold for a targeted break-in is higher than for opportunistic burglary.
