West Yorkshire has the highest burglary rate of any county in England and Wales. Not in 2019, not during the pandemic blip. Now, in 2026, with twelve months of fresh data behind it.

CrimeRate.co.uk published figures covering the period to April 2026. The number is 5.18 residential burglary offences per 1,000 people. The national average sits at 3.14. That means if you live in this county, including Otley, Menston, Burley-in-Wharfedale or Bramhope, you're facing a risk that's 1.65 times higher than the England and Wales baseline. And the trend line is still creeping upward.

That's the data. Let me tell you what it actually means for a house on the Newall estate or a terraced rental on Cambridge Street.

Why This Isn't a Surprise (But Should Still Prompt Action)

West Yorkshire has held this position before. What's different in mid-2026 is that the context has shifted in two ways at once.

First, the FCA's Consumer Duty rules, which came fully into force between June and July 2026, now require insurers to demonstrate they're delivering good outcomes for customers. In plain terms, insurers have stronger regulatory pressure to apply their policy terms accurately, not generously. If your policy schedule specifies a British Standard deadlock or a TS007 3-star cylinder on the front door, and you don't have one, a claim after a break-in becomes vulnerable. Not automatically refused, but disputed. And a disputed burglary claim in the country's worst county for burglary is a particularly bad time to discover your locks were non-compliant.

Second, snap attacks are still the dominant method for uPVC and composite doors in this region. A standard euro cylinder, the kind fitted to millions of doors, can be snapped off with a screwdriver and a sharp kick in under a minute. No noise. No drama. The attacker doesn't need the cylinder to open the door: once the cam is exposed, one screwdriver turn does it.

What Standard Actually Matters and Why

Three designations come up most often. They're not interchangeable.

A TS007 3-star cylinder, fitted to a uPVC or composite door, is the practical baseline for most Otley homes. It won't snap. The anti-snap section shears off cleanly before the cam is exposed, leaving the attacker holding half a cylinder and nothing else. Brands like Ultion and Avocet ABS carry the designation; both are also tested to SS312 Diamond. Prices for supply and fitting typically run £80 to £130 depending on the door, the cylinder length, and the access difficulty.

For older timber doors with a mortice lock, BS3621 is the mark to look for. A 5-lever mortice that carries BS3621 has passed 1,000 key-change combinations, bolt throw of at least 13mm, and attack resistance testing. Insurance policies written for older properties often specify it by name. If the lock on your Victorian terrace in Pool-in-Wharfedale says "5 lever" on the box but doesn't carry the kite mark, it may not meet the policy requirement.

The Landlord Angle

If you're letting a property in Yeadon, Guiseley or Ilkley, this matters twice over. Your insurance policy has lock requirements. Your tenants almost certainly don't know what cylinder is fitted. The locks on most mid-market rental properties were chosen by a builder in 2004 to hit a price point. They're not compliant.

A cylinder change across a two-bed rental: roughly £90 to £110. The cost of a disputed insurance claim, a week's lost rental income during police investigation, and a shaken tenant looking to move: considerably more.

One Practical Step

Get the front door cylinder out and look at the end cap. A TS007 3-star cylinder will have a star rating stamped or printed on it, usually with a kite mark. No mark, or just a brand name, and it's almost certainly a standard cylinder with no anti-snap protection.
